Talking About Your Business
One of the key pillars of small business success is communication. Every business benefits from knowing what and how to communicate about itself.
To do that well, you need to be clear about what value you offer and who you best serve. It sounds simple, but it’s something that many business owners – especially at the outset – really struggle with.
Still, it’s important, because being clear on what your real value is, and who most benefits from it, is the foundation of clear and compelling communication that resonates instantly with your prospective clients and customers.
Ideally, you want to able to express this in one or 2 simple sentences that look something like this:
I’m in the business of _____ [what?].
I help______ [describe your ideal customer] be/do/have (or other action word) _____ [value you provide] so that _____ [what results do they get].
Here are some examples to get you started:
- I’m in the business of office administration. I help small business owners get organized so that they can focus on growing their revenue.
- I’m in the business of interior design. I help homeowners create beautiful spaces so that they have a personal sanctuary to come to at the end of the day.
- I’m in the business of restaurant consulting. I help restaurant owners streamline their operations so that they can unlock hidden sources of income in their business.
Don’t despair if this doesn’t come easily right away. Word on the street is that it takes many new business owners almost 2 years to get really clear on what they’re offering.
That was certainly the case for me, and I do this kind of thinking for a living!
So, let’s hear it in the comments below… what’s your value?
